Henry Vacuum Cleaner - A History

The Henry vacuum cleaner has long been a staple part of the typical family home in Great Britain, and as a product that the entire nation can be proud of, he has become symbolic of our wonderful British culture. Britain’s quirks, charms and idiosyncrasies can be defined by bad teeth, The Beatles, roast dinners, Bourneville and Cadbury’s chocolate, a good strong cup of English tea, and of course – the much adored Henry vacuum cleaner. This adorable little vacuum cleaner is not only used in homes but is for commercial cleaning also, with many retailers selling Henry vacuum cleaner bags and Henry vacuum cleaner spares.

Today, Henry has been joined by his sweet sister, Hetty. But nothing is more iconic than the first, the original, and the Somerset born and raised Henry.

Vacuum Cleaner History – How it All Began

The Henry vacuum cleaner may seem vintage to most of us, but there’s a lot more where this invention began. In 1860, the very first concept of a vacuuming machine was thrown around by Daniel Hess of West Union, Iowa. Named quite appropriately as ‘The Carpet Sweeper’, the product received an official patent. The 1800s saw the manually powered cleaners, with models such as ‘The Whirlwind’, and it wasn’t until the 1900s that electrically powered machinery was invented. There are many inventors to credit in the early years of the 20th Century, including Corrine Dufour, Chapman and Skinner from San Francisco, Melville Bissell, and Hubert Cecil Booth.

Today, the Henry vacuum cleaner has become an integral part of our history, and remains a proud British product that can be purchased in most shops. The Chard based factory has manufactured over five million vacuums, along with Henry vacuum cleaner bags and Henry vacuum cleaner spares, making it a staggering number around the world.
