Keepin’ It Clean With A Henry Vacuum Cleaner

If your vacuum cleaner isn’t quite as powerful as it used to be, and struggles a little with particularly think wads of dust, maybe it’s time to invest in a new one? The Henry vacuum cleaner, from British company Numatic International, has earned a solid reputation for power and reliability since its first appearance in 1980.

A Smiling Face

Think of a Henry vacuum cleaner and the first image that comes to most people’s minds is the screen-printed smiling face that defines the whole identity of the brand. But behind those two eyes lurks a machine with some respectable cleaning power. The latest models include a 1200-watt Twinflo motor and an integrated eco mode with adjustable power settings. They also use cloth texture bags which offer better filtration than the old paper variety.

On a more superficial level, users also now have a choice of colours and are not confined to the original warm red. Blue, green and yellow models are all available.

Numatic has sold more than seven million of the Henry vacuum cleaner over the last 30 years, thanks to the brand’s well-earned reputation as a reliable and hard-wearing workhorse.

Pumping Air

Like the telephone and the television, the vacuum cleaner is one of those domestic implements that most of us take completely for granted even if we do not really understand how they work.

In fact, the Henry vacuum cleaner and all other brands work thanks to the air pump built into each. The resulting partial vacuum, when funnelled by the machine’s nozzle, is powerful enough to suck up all that accumulated dust and dirt.

The vacuum cleaner is older than you might think, with antecedents dating as far back as 1860. However, the first true vacuum cleaner was invited by a British engineer called Hubert Cecil Booth. In 1901 he attended a demonstration of a novel American domestic device at the Empire Music Hall in London. This device could blow dust the dust off chairs. Booth had a moment of inspiration – what if sucked up dust and instead of blowing it away?

The rest is dust-busting history!
